Use your talents!

On Sunday, March 9, 2008 Pastor Dave Gish had a sermon about “Investing in God”, in the series “Use it Wisely” The sermon centered around Jesus’ parable of the three servants that were given talents and how they used them. To drive the point home, Pastor Dave challenged the congregation to invest in God’s work to support Hanna’s Orphanage in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The amount we are going to raise is $25,000 for an apartment for some of the orphans. What made the challenge unique, was the fact that Hope Church handed out money to the congregation - $10, $20 or $50 and each person was asked to go multiply what was given to them. This blog serves to show and encourage all of us in how we invest our talents for the Lord!

We encourage everyone to add their ideas in to spur others on. Please use this blog to advertise what you are doing in case you are looking for help or customers!

I invested in buying a pound of my favorite coffee at Starbucks for $10 (which is what I received). I am charging myself and whoever enjoys a cup at our house to pay $3 per cup. I now have $12 and will buy the next pound of Starbucks coffee with that… etc.
I have a post-it note on the container where I keep the paper filters to check off every time I make coffee. So far I have made 36 pots of coffee at $3 = $108. Perhaps this is not the most creative use of my talents, but I am willing to partner with anyone else who needs some funding - please let me know!

I am doing two things for the talent adventure. I took the $50.00 I received and am entering the Wilton Photo contest at the library, intending to give prize money or money from picture sales to the talent goal. Secondly I prepared my own taxes, saved the preparers fee and found a larger refund than I anticipated, all of which I am donating to the talent adventure

Although I am not a member of the parish, I would just like to commend everyone for the efforts being made. My little sister was adopted from Ethiopia, so I feel a deep personal connection to the country, and I love seeing so many hands extended to Ethiopia's orphans. I, myself, created a small organization for AHOPE, an orphanage for HIV+ children in Addis Ababa: http://www.sweetdreamsproject.blogspot.com

We are taking the $20 we received and buying 2 tee shirts that will have "100 Miles for 100 Orphans" printed in large letters on them. We are walking 100 miles each over the next 30 days wearing the tee shirts so we can share this ministry in Ethiopia with anyone who asks (we will walk within our immediate city area). We have also sent an email out to all of our friends and family outside of Hope Church asking them to sponsor our walk with a commitment per mile walked. Not only are we praying that we will get friends and family to support our walk but equally important that we get the opportunity to share our faith and what HoE Ministries is all about..."Missions happens on the way to Missions !!"

Tom & Rosemary are sponsoring a "Grand Opening - HOE Fundraiser" on Sunday, April 27 at AJ's Burgers in New Rochelle, NY, starting at 3:00PM.
$35.00 per person.

We will also display some of the photos that were taken of the orphan children in Ethiopia as well a share a little about the work of HOE Ministries in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

AJ's is a newly opened family restaurant by Mario Castiello, Tom's cousin. A fun place & great family restaurant with terrific food at resaonable prices.

We expect about 40-50 people to join a fun afternoon and of course the proceed will go toward the housing projectfor the oprphan children at Hanna'a Orphan Homes.

Blessings,
The Mustico's

My husband and I have pooled our money. I made 30 photo notecards using the 60$'s of seed money and have been selling the cards and envelopes for 4$'s a piece. I have sold at Village Market. I have an ongoing display of cards at Rockwell Art and Framing and Wilton Center Photo which includes a writeup about HOE.
My best response has been from my friends and family who are familiar with my cards because I give them as gifts...they actually are excited to be able to buy the cards and help raise money for the orphanage.
Warren is in charge of shipping! We are having fun with this and it is going very well. Thanks be to God!!! Cindi

We received $120 as a family. I am purchasing items such as Abercrombie, Aeropostale, etc. at the local thrift shop and selling them on Ebay.

My husband and I combined our money ($70) and are having a great big tag sale at our house in a couple of Saturdays. We will use the money to advertise and buy donuts and coffee, which our kids will sell at the tag sale! We are also accepting large and small items from friends and neighbors so that we have more to sell. We will give all of the money that we bring in that day to the ministry in Ethiopia. This has been such a fun way to get our whole family involved in giving to the Lord. Even our kids (7,6, and 4) our excited about seeing how much our "investment" will bring about for God. This Saturday, May 3rd, I will be hosting a church-wide Tag Sale in the Hope Church parking lot to multiply my talents. It will cost $10 a table for anyone interested to set up their own items to sell. This is a perfect opportunity for others to multiply their own talents.
With my $50, I will be advertising in the papers, with signs and providing food to sell.

I hope you can come and sell some of your stuff!

I created a trifold brochure which included the story of the Hope Church Talents(our purpose)and my response to it. I was drawn to the idea of contributing to organizations that pool monies and provide llamas, chickens, whatever to different poverty areas. It seemed a great example of taking a little and multiplying. So, inside the brochure contained info on HOE Ministries, as well as other opportunities. People could donate money 100% to HOE or 20% could be designated to other ministries (world vision, heifer international). I gave them information on all three so they could continue multiplying on their own.
Too late in the game I had some other ideas, which I would have preferred as I really don't like asking anyone for money. So, I did not distribute as widely as I might have. Still my $20 has thus far increased over 26%.

My name is Hannah Stoddard and I am 6 years old. I took $5 and bought brownie mixes. Then I made brownies. I went around my neighborhood and to my friends and gave the brownies away for a donation. I made $60.

As part of the Talent Adventure, our family hosted a neighborhood car wash -- when the weather and the kids schedules gave us a break! It was a lot of fun and people were very generous.

A friend of mine is a wonderfully talented quilter. She agreed to use her sewing skills for a neat project. We offered to recycle t-shirts from kids' favorite activities (basketball, plays, baseball, etc.) into drawstring totes. So, we pulled our talent money, bought supplies, and distributed lots of flyers describing the project and its purpose. Our talents from the reverse offering were more than doubled! Even better, we enjoyed many opportunities to share our enthusiasm for Hannah's Orphanage and Hope Church.
